Publishing Information

This reprint includes the addition of the following introductory paragraph before the story:
“The following incident in the public career of Vidocq, the celebrated French chief of police, whose demise we noticed a day or two since, is characteristic of his admirable tact in bringing offenders to justice. We hardly know in this instance which most to admire, his successful attempt, or the secrecy with which he protected the guilty wife of the merchant.”
